VelocityAP's supercharger drive-belt tensioner upgrade is intended for higher-HP applications or for additional peace of mind and maximised OEM performance.
The tensioner assembly and belt routing on JLR 3.0L and 5.0L Supercharged engines do not produce as much belt wrap around the upper pulley as other similar applications. VelocityAP has found evidence, particularly on early cars, of belts rubbing against the tensioner body even on completely original, unmodified vehicles. JLR uses the upper idler pulley to provide clearance from the tensioner body, but this reduces belt contact on the upper supercharger drive pulley.
Through extensive data logging with its proprietary system, VelocityAP has observed evidence of belt slippage in the boost-pressure logs of many cars.
As OEM tensioners wear, they can cause slippage and premature belt failure, particularly on modified applications with higher OEM-supercharger drive rates and high-load applications such as the TVS 2300. A stronger tensioner is required to handle this load.
Not all vehicles conform exactly to published specifications, and many vehicles may have mixed or non-OEM components. VelocityAP recommends verifying that the belt tensioner operates within its designed range. Specifically, the tensioner arm should sit near the midpoint of its sweep when installed with the correct belt length and routing to ensure proper tension and long-term reliability.
This is a required component of TVS 2300 supercharger replacement kits on 5.0 Supercharged applications.
