GiroDisc Racing Brakes

Girodisc is a Braking Technology Company dedicated to developing the best quality high performance braking components and solutions. The company has been in business since 2003 and is guided under the direction of company Principal Martin Meade, who spent five years as an Engineer with Porsche Engineering Services, where he played a role in developing current Porsche technology.

Girodisc designs and engineers the replacement discs after documenting and studying the OE brake system and specifically the disc design. After analyzing the data and determining how best to maximize the benefit of the new disc, the design process is carried out using 3D CAD-CAE (Computer aided drafting, Computer aided engineering). Prototypes are constructed and tested with a vehicle. When the Girodisc team is satisfied that the disc will meet the goals established for the vehicle, it is produced in limited quantities and released for sale.

Putting lessons learned and the latest technologies together to develop the highest performance braking systems for your project, racing car, or road car is the mission of Girodisc.

Rotors

The GiroDisc system reduces unsprung and overall vehicle weight while increasing ventilation and cooling capacity of the brake disc and retaining its original dimensions. This is accomplished by using two-piece disc construction. The central “hat” section of the disc is made from 6061-T6 aircraft specification aluminium and the disc from cast iron to the same specification and material used in racing, with a curved vane design developed in racing to act as a centrifugal pump to force cooling air through the disc.

Front rotors

The rotor rings are machined from a proprietary casting made of high-carbon steel formulated to GiroDisc’s specifications. This superior metallurgy results in a rotor that holds up better, and the 48 curved vanes act as a centrifugal pump pulling air in through the hub to effectively cool the rotors under hard use. The 2-piece design means a reusable hat which can be attached to new rings when they need to be replaced.

All major components including the hats, rotor rings, and drive pins are manufactured in-house at our facility in Bellingham, WA from domestically sourced materials. The drive pins are made from a high-strength steel alloy and cadmium-plated for corrosion resistance. All rotors are assembled with spring clips and Belleville washers for race-ready float while also being street-friendly with no noise from loose hardware.

Rear rotors

The Girodisc system is a direct replacement for the OE disc. No modifications are necessary. The disc will bolt directly to the car and work with OE calipers perfectly. By upgrading your brakes with lightweight high performance replacements as opposed to a big brake kit, your factory bias is maintained as well as your ABS efficiency. The reduction in rotational and unsprung weight allows for quicker acceleration and suspension response.

The central hat section of our rotor is made from strictly U.S. sourced 6061-T6 aircraft specification aluminum. The disc is made from our own proprietary cast iron, poured in the USA and machined from start to finish in house at Girodisc. The rotor utilizes a curved vane design, developed in racing to act as a centrifugal pump to force cooling air through the disc.

Brakepads

Magicpads

Girodisc "Magic Pads" are the solution to your squeaky, dusty, expensive factory pads. They have less dust than typical factory pads and much less than typical performance pads. You won't be cleaning your wheels nearly as often. Additionally, they have great initial bite, something most less expensive pads are lacking. But the real reason people like our pads so much is they are the "silver bullet" to brake noise problems. Magic pads are a semi-metallic composition that is easy on the rotors and the wallet. We recommend always replacing pads as a whole car set when switching compounds. All magic pads come with our anti-noise shields pre-installed, included in the price.

GP Racepads

Our GP40 compound falls between a sprint and an endurance compound. It maintains good bite and pedal feel while being friendly to your rotors. They are a favorite among our track day customers and shares a lineage with compounds found on cars competing in legendary races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. These pads have been race-tested and hold up to the brutal conditions on the track.

ST43 Racepads

Raybestos ST-43 are our favorite intermediate track pad. Very aggressive pad, yet easy on the rotors. They are down slightly on overall friction and initial bite from the most aggressive offerings, with the flipside being lower running temps and increased component life. Make no mistake, these pads are the real deal. We have customers running them in Ferrari Challenge cars, Evo's, STi's, Vipers, Corvettes and more. If you rely on ABS, these pads will be more forgiving with their initial bite. When you read the factory literature for these pads, they downplay them abit as being not very aggressive. When you consider these are developed for Nascar (read heavy, high-horsepower, lots of tire and downforce), "Intermediate" means "Full Boogie" in a 350-400hp amateur driven sports cars. These have been tested by countless customers and given the universal thumbs up for overall performance and satisfaction. Run what the winners run!

When comparison shopping, be sure to notice the quality of our components. Any questions, give us a call, we're happy to help!

Street/Strip Pads

The Girodisc S/S or "street/strip" pads represent the ultimate in high performance brake pads. The semi-metallic compound maintains a consistent coefficient of friction from 0 to 1000 degrees making them an ideal option for people that are looking for a dual purpose pad that will work well on both the street and the occasional track day. The formula has very little compressibility ensuring a very firm pedal and immediate bite which has made the S/S pads a favorite among people who autocross and those who demand the most out of their street cars. Inevitably these will dust more than our Magic pads however with the addition of our anti-noise shims that come on every set of pads they generally do not make any noise if they are bed in properly.

Shields & Shims

Shields

The problem of brake fluid boiling is simply traced to heat transferring from the rotors and pads directly into the fluid through the caliper pistons. When brake fluid boils, it releases air that is normally part of the molecular structure of the fluid. This air is compressible of course, and the brake pedal goes to the floor instead of moving the caliper pistons. Production cars tend to suffer from this on track days more as they don't usually have the extensive cooling duct and exotic brake materials as true racing cars. True racing only brake calipers generally come with titanium caliper pistons for one reason. Titanium as a material, has low thermal conductivity. This means that it is very bad at transferring heat. Which is good if you are trying to keep your fluid cool.

Shims

Sometimes you try everything known to man to quiet down a set of brake pads but to no avail. Stubborn brake pad noise can require the addition of noise abatement shims to help quiet them down. These shims utilize the exact material used by many OEM's to absorb vibration and dampen noise. These shims have a highly slippery face and a peel-off self adhesive film on back to help hold the shim in place during installation and use.

These can be a great help in providing noise free braking. NOT intended to quiet down race pads driven on the street!

Replacement rings

Replacement rings

Our replacement rings are sold in pairs and include replacement hardware. The only parts you will reuse are your existing GiroDisc hats.

Please note that unless specifically noted, GiroDisc replacement rings are only designed to work with GiroDisc hats. They are not designed to be used with other brands, including hats from cars equipped with 2-piece rotors from the factory.
